Vision + Provision | Message Seven
This new series is called “Vision and Provision.”
By ‘vision’ we mean the big spiritual questions of life:
❔ Why are we here?
❔ What is our dream for our life, and what is God’s dream for our life?
By ‘provision’ we mean the practical resources God provides to make dreams a reality: time, money, effort, energy, etc.
Scriptures | Matthew 9:9-13
“As Jesus continued on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at a kiosk for collecting taxes. He said to him, “Follow me,” and he got up and followed him. As Jesus sat down to eat in Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners joined Jesus and his disciples at the table. But when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” When Jesus heard it, he said, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor, but sick people do. Go and learn what this means: I want mercy and not sacrifice.[a] I didn’t come to call righteous people, but sinners.” ~Matthew 9:9-13
Question 1 | You don’t have to have heard the sermon from Sunday, but if you were in church, watched online, or listened to the podcast, what stuck with you?
Question 2 | What stands out to you most about Jesus' life and ministry as you think about the missional movement of the table?
Question 3 | Emma talked about 3 strategies from our own tables:
Simplicity, Hospitality, Opportunity
➡️ It can be simple, not big & complicated. Jesus' missional strategy was quality time with food and drinks around the table.
➡️ It's not about having a cute, decorated, cozy house... biblical hospitality is welcoming in the stranger, your enemies and those who who live contrarian values and views from your own.
➡️ Jesus' conversations were always addressing things like sin, forgiveness, and one’s spiritual life - how do we create opportunities at our tables to find genuine connection, to know and be known, to talk about sin, forgiveness, confession & repentance?
❔Which one of these is most challenging for you? Is there one that comes more naturally?
Question 4 | Emma said the way our city will come to encounter the grace and love of Jesus, is by casting tables of welcome all over our city. In your context, neighborhood and current life season:
❔What could it look like to "cast tables of welcome" across the city?
