May Messages | Part Four
In Deuteronomy 6:5-9 Jesus calls us to impress the word of God on both our own and our children’s hearts.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
Question 1: You don’t have to have heard the sermon from Sunday, but if you were in church or if you listened to the podcast, what stuck with you?
Question 2: Matthew summarized Deuteronomy 6:5-9 as “complete love”. What does that mean to you? What are some practical ways that you can live that out in your life?
Question 3: Matthew spoke on children’s eyes and ears being open at all times. Who are the young people in your life that may be listening to what you say or how you act? Are you being intentional with them? If so, how?
Question 4: This section of Deuteronomy directs us to have God’s word written on our hearts. It also gave some practical ways to do that. Essentially: weave God into everything you do. Matthew gave some concrete examples: opening our bible and keeping it open and ready for you in a place that you will see it, placing a verse on the homescreen on our phone, layering prayer with daily actions like washing dishes or even brushing your teeth. How do you keep the word of God constant in your life? If you already do some things like this, what are they? Share a few examples with the group that they can try! If this is a new idea for you, what is one thing that you can start doing this week?
