Sermon Series:
May Messages | Part One
"How does the Word of God apply to my life right now?"
Read: Psalm 27:1, 4-5
The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?
…
One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.
For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling;
he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.
Question 1: You don’t have to have heard the sermon from Sunday, but if you were in church, watched online, or listened to the podcast, what stuck with you?
Question 2: Over the course of the Biblical story, there is a clear progression in terms of sacred space or “buildings:” First God lived in a tent (called the Tabernacle, Exodus 25:8-9), then God lived in a building (called the Temple, 1 Kings 5:5). Use your imagination a bit: What spiritual message does it send when God lives in a tent? What spiritual message does it send when God lives in a building? How do each of those structures help us connect with God?
Question 3: Finally, after the death and resurrection of Jesus, God no longer lived in a place but in a people. “Do you not know that your bodies are temples
of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?” - 1 Corinthians 6:19. How would you treat a temple or a sacred space? Kindly? Respectfully? With care and reverence? How can you treat others, and yourself, in the same way you treat a temple or a sacred space?
Question 4: The message of scripture is clear: God doesn’t need buildings, but people do. When we say “God doesn’t need buildings” we mean that God is not limited by physical time and space, and that the gospel of Jesus Christ does not depend on architecture. But people do need buildings! We also shared that People need the Lord and people need a place. How can we spiritually care for people by creating a physical place for them? How will our new worship center, a physical place, help care for people spiritually and holistically?
