Do What Matters | 13 Holy Habits That Can Change Everything
Habit #5 | Marveling
We can sense God all around us.
Scriptures | Psalm 104
Our Holy Habit for this week is awe, wonder, and marveling. Read some or all of Psalm 104, a long passage about awe, wonder, and marveling.
Question 1 | You don’t have to have heard the sermon from Sunday, but if you were in church, watched online, or listened to the podcast, what stuck with you?
Question 2 | The first teaching point Jeremy shared is that “Marvel is Medicine.” Scripture is filled with the awe, wonder, and glory of God. And now science has confirmed that experiences of wonder have a measurably positive impact on the human body and brain. How can you begin to “take this medicine” and try to experience everyday awe and wonder in scripture and in your daily life?
Question 3 | The second teaching point Jeremy shared is “Creation is Awesome.” Not only do we experience God in nature, scripture directs us to go outside and notice nature as a way of experiencing wonder and awe! (Note there are over 70 references to creation in Psalm 104). How can you “make contact with creation” this week as a way of practicing wonder and awe?
Question 4 | The next teaching points Jeremy shared is “Wonder is Personal... and Contagious.” “Wonder is Personal” means that no one can feel wonder for you, you have to go see the Grand Canyon for yourself. “Wonder is Contagious” means that other people can help, or hurt, our ability to experience awe, wonder, and marvel. On the second point, who in the past or in the present helps you experience wonder or awe?
Question 5 | The final teaching point is “Awe Changes Us.” Why is scripture, and the life of Jesus, filled with wonders? Because sometimes astonishment is more powerful than argument. Sometimes we don’t need a reason, we need a revelation. Can you think of a situation in your life where this might apply? And how can you help others experience wonder or awe?
