Do What Matters | 13 Holy Habits That Can Change Everything

Habit #13 | Serving

We can find JOY in serving others.

Scriptures | Acts 9:36-43

Our Holy Habit for this week is Serving Others.  In more than one part of the Bible, Jesus sent out his disciple to serve.

When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. ...So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere. ~Luke 9:1-2, 6

Jesus said “...go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.” ~Matthew 10:7-8

The seventy-two returned with joy... ~Luke 10:17

When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves... ~Luke 9:10

Question 1 | You don’t have to have heard the sermon from Sunday, but if you were in church, watched online, or listened to the podcast, what stuck with you?

Question 2 | Jeremy’s first point was that serving others requires a balance of action and reflection. The disciples acted on the command of Jesus to go, but they also came back to Jesus for rest and reflection as they withdrew by themselves.

❔ How would you describe the level of action and activity in your life?

How would you describe the level of rest and space and prayer and reflection in your life?

Where do you need to do more of one or less of the other in order to bring more balance in your life?

Question 3 | Jeremy’s second point is that our goal is to serve others and experience the joy of service. The disciples experienced the joy of service when they 1️⃣ served and did so 2️⃣ together. This leads us to the questions: Are we serving, and are we serving together with others? How would you answer that question for yourself? If this question applies to you, please answer: what gets in the way of you serving, and what gets in the way of you serving with others?

Question 4 | Jeremy’s third point was that serving others requires that we give and receive.

Which is easier for you: giving or receiving?

Which is harder for you: giving or receiving?

And more importantly: Where in your life do you need to give?

And where in your life do you need to receive?
